Hordijk's facility

About us

We produce plastic packaging and greenhouse systems for the food and agri sector.

The Hordijk Group is a family business

The history of the family business Hordijk goes back more than 100 years. Our roots are in horticulture as a producer of wooden packaging/boxes and wooden greenhouse construction materials. Over time, wood was replaced by aluminium and steel for greenhouse construction and plastic for packaging. Today, the Hordijk Group consists of four specialised subsidiaries. Among other things, we produce plastic packaging for (fresh) food products and develop greenhouse systems in steel and aluminium. We are active both in the Netherlands and abroad.

Foundation of Hordijk

1922

In 1922, Groeneveld Hordijk founded his carpentry Hordijk in Berkel en Rodenrijs. Because of his good contacts with horticulturists, he specialised in wooden packaging for horticulture.

Takeover of the Huisman box factory in Delft

1945

In order to provide a good livelihood for the next generation, Groeneveld Hordijk expanded its business immediately after the war by acquiring the Kisten- en Raamlijstenfabriek Huisman in Delft. This was followed in 1950 by the acquisition of NV Kistenfabriek en houthandel v/h Beekhoven in Zaandam.

The switch to plastics

1966

A growing demand for the blue plastic packaging for strawberries leads to a switch from wood to plastic, a revolutionary step for Hordijk. In Zaandam, production of the Van Dalen mushroom and/or strawberry tray, a combination of hard plastic and cardboard, is started.

Founding of Alcomij in 's-Gravenzande

1969

Hordijk also continues to adapt to the changing needs of the market in greenhouse construction. Together with Voskamp and Vrijland NV, Alcomij was established in 1969. Under the management of Hordijker Jan Benschop, Alcomij started producing aluminium and steel parts for greenhouse construction, thus switching to more modern materials.

EPS packaging production for cucumbers starts

1969

In 1970, the Delft plant switched to the production of expanded polystyrene, also known as Styrofoam packaging for the transport of cucumbers. By the end of the 1960s, wood was no longer sufficient as a raw material for packaging for horticulturists, who began to look for alternatives and chose EPS.

Factory becomes industrial hall in Berkel

1979

All woodworking activities had now been transferred to the Delft site. As the Berkel factory had become obsolete, the production buildings on the Rodenrijseweg were replaced by a 7,500 m2 industrial hall in 1977/1978.

Hordijk acquires Alcomij share from Voskamp & Vrijland

1985

in 1985, Hordijk buys out Voskamp & Vrijkamp and Alcomij becomes a wholly owned Hordijk subsidiary. The division and the name Hordijk Kassen BV are integrated into Alcomij.

Introduction APET and new distribution centre in Zaandam

1997

In 1995, after much research and testing, Hordijk Zaandam succeeded in extruding a combination of polystyrene and polypropylene. The transparent, easily recyclable APET was born. A big step that gave Hordijk a competitive edge and made it a bigger supplier of packaging for the food industry and retail. In 1997, Hordijk had the opportunity to buy land on the Daalderweg in Zaandam and build its own distribution centre.

Hordijk says goodbye to wood as a raw material. It switches to plastic for all its packaging.

2007

Hordijk closes its Berkel branch, bringing an end to 85 years of wood processing. Hordijk expands its plastic processing activities by acquiring an injection moulding and extrusion blow moulding company in Zevenhuizen from Rexam, thus creating Hordijk Spuitgiet Verpakkingen.
