Florensis produces more than a billion young plants each year from seeds, cuttings and tissue culture. For this challenge, the company was on the search for a reliable producer of recyclable horticultural trays in 2019. Hordijk was selected. The innovative partnership continues to contribute to flourishing business results.

Florensis is an innovative family business based in Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht. It has made a name for itself worldwide as a breeder and supplier of base material to professional growers. In 2019, the company is thriving – and has outgrown one of its regular suppliers.

Operations manager Roy van Heesch says: “We continued to grow and one of our suppliers found it difficult to keep up with the numbers. Hordijk EPS Verpakkingen en Isolatie got in touch with us because they have the right techniques to produce the right, recyclable trays for us”.

Both companies are pioneering sustainability.

Up to eight times reusable trays

Florensis has its own unique tray system for the production and delivery of young plants. This puts them at the forefront of their industry in terms of sustainability. Roy: “This is not so common in our industry. We collect used trays from our customers at our site and ensure that they end up at Hordijk. In this way, our trays can be recycled up to eight times.

No challenge is too big

Hordijk takes a proactive approach to working with Florensis. Roy says: “They are easy to reach and approach and are open to challenges. I remember when the new tray was still in development, but I had to produce in the meantime. I didn’t have to occupy myself with it. Hordijk did an excellent job!

Flexible partner

Hordijk provides Florensis with additional storage facilities. “We stock trays ourselves for the biggest rush in the first 20 weeks of the year. All in all, these trays take up a lot of space. With Hordijk, we work with storage on their premises. They can also scale up quickly and keep up with our numbers. It really is a flexible partner”.

Space-saving tray format

Hordijk was actively involved in the development of a new tray. Florensis already had some ideas about the size of the new tray.

Roy: “We already had trays in two different heights. Together with Hordijk we developed a third size in between. This tray is a little lower, but just as stable and with the same content. This saves space. In other words: more efficient work”.
