Combine techniques? Hordijk Zevenhuizen is working with Zaandam. The brief: a sustainable version of an existing salad container with a tamper-evident closure.”
The question came at the end of 2019 from Colruyt Belgium, where two types of packaging were used. Wim, then Account Manager at Hordijk Spuitgietverpakkingen in Zevenhuizen, explains: “The first was an injection-moulded tray with an injection-moulded lid and a tamper-evident closure (a break tab on the lid). The second was a thermoformed tray with a thermoformed lid and a seal. The tamper-evident tab and seal ensures consumers that the container has not been opened after production. Colruyt Belgium was looking for a party that could develop a new concept within a short period of time. They wanted to move towards a single design for the packaging: lighter, more durable and at a lower cost. They were also looking for a different safety closure.
Because of the Corona crisis, we could not visit each other, so the telephone and Skype became the tools. Our product developers worked hard and a great new concept was ready in a short time. Hordijk Zevenhuizen developed an injection-moulded lid with a special locking cam and a breaking clip. Hordijk Zaandam produced a special thermoformed tray. The lid can now only be opened in one place, by breaking the tab”.
Colruyt Belgium was immediately impressed by the presentation of the concept and the cooperation between the two Hordijk branches in Zevenhuizen and Zaandam. Wim explains:
“It’s incredibly nice to have both technologies in-house. This is unique on the market.
We then sent 3D printed models to Colruyt Belgium. Seeing and feeling something real is of course the best”.
On 18 May 2020, the time had come to sign the contract. The contract was concluded between Hordijk and the intermediary Brabopak on behalf of Colruyt Belgium. Says Wim: “A great first result of a successful cooperation with Hordijk. We are proud of it. And of course this is only the beginning”.
