Foam moulding

Pellets made of polystyrene are heated with steam, fill up with air and then expand.

Foam moulding is a technique in which pellets of polystyrene are heated with steam. This causes these pellets to fill with air and expand. They can expand up to 60 times.

These pellets are also known as beads. After being inflated, they are blown into a mould. Steam is then blown through the mould, causing the beads to expand again. This gives the product its required shape.

Electrification: not steam, but electricity for sustainable EPS production

Electrification is a revolutionary innovation in the production of EPS (expanded polystyrene). Royal Hordijk is the first company in the Netherlands to introduce a machine that produces EPS products using electricity instead of steam. A new technique that drastically reduces CO2 emissions. With this innovation, Hordijk processes EPS material even more sustainably.

Most importantly, virtually no steam is used in the production of EPS. This results in significantly lower CO2 emissions. An electric foam moulding machine saves 427 tonnes of CO2 per year. This is equivalent to the CO2 emissions of around 57 households.

Recycled EPS as a raw material

Another advantage of the electric foam moulding machine is that mechanically recycled material can be processed well without any loss of quality in the final product. There are good tests with at least 50% recycled material. This is even more beneficial for overall CO2 emissions because more can be reused and less new material is needed. This contributes to the government’s climate goals: by 2030, 50% of all raw materials should be recycled materials.
