Polypropene, or polypropylene as it is also called, is abbreviated to PP. It is a versatile material and is therefore widely used in packaging.

Polypropylene is a polyolefin plastic. It is a hard but flexible plastic and is therefore often used in hinged closures or plastic squeeze bottles. As a film, PP is transparent, but when applied to slightly thicker rigid packaging it is opal (milky white).

PP has very good moisture barrier and sealing properties. PP packaging is heat resistant up to 120°C and suitable for microwave use. If the packaging is to be suitable for freezer storage, a special PP is required which can be used down to -40°C.

PP is highly recyclable, but recycled PP should not be reused in food or pharmaceutical packaging. However, PP can be recycled into packaging for non-contact sensitive product categories. Injection moulded PP packaging can be labelled with an ‘In Mould’ PP label so that the entire packaging remains of one material type (mono).
