On 1 July, Royal Hordijk will open the doors of a new office in Germany: Hordijk Verpackungen GmbH in Heusenstamm. The new branch is the result of the demerger of the cooperative Miko-Hordijk GmbH. Hordijk sets itself ambitious goals in Germany.
In Germany, Hordijk had been operating a sales organisation together with Miko-Pac from Belgium for 15 years: Miko-Hordijk GmbH. With the establishment of Hordijk Verpackungen GmbH, Hordijk is responding to the growing market for plastic packaging from its eastern neighbours. “We see a lot of opportunities in Germany, especially in PET, where Hordijk is the market leader in the Netherlands,” says Rik Hennink, CEO of the Hordijk Group.
Growth expected
In addition to the German branch, Hordijk has four other locations in the Netherlands. Growth is expected to continue next year. Strong growth is expected in Germany in particular. The decision to open a new office here was therefore a quick one. “We hope to open up a new market in Germany, especially among medium-sized companies,” says Rik. “We have already proven ourselves with large customers in the Netherlands and Germany. Of course we want to grow. That is also my goal!
In the German market, PET still lags behind PP for plastic trays
There are important differences between the Dutch and German markets, explains Rik. “In Germany, PET still lags behind PP in the market for plastic trays. But PET offers unique opportunities, especially when it comes to recycling. Hordijk has already proven this in the Netherlands. This will enable us to exploit our market potential with this material in Germany as well. In doing so, Hordijk in Germany is of course drawing on the Dutch experience. “In the Netherlands, Hordijk is the market leader. This is partly due to the fact that we are able to produce mono-packaging with PET and PP,” explains Rik.
PET recycling
The packaging market in Germany is in full swing. This presents new opportunities for Hordijk. “The market is competitive. This is a challenge. But I see solid growth for our market in Germany and the German-speaking countries over the next ten years. In June, Royal Hordijk won the ‘Afvalfonds Verpakkingen Award 2022’ in the Netherlands. This shows what is possible in Germany too. Rik: “Especially in PET recycling, Hordijk is much further ahead in the Netherlands than in other European countries. We are increasingly able to recycle PET tray-to-tray. That’s what we need in the plastics industry.
Royal Hordijk
Since 11 May, Hordijk has been called Royal Hordijk. A great honour and the crowning of our centenary. Rik understands the importance of the title. “I notice how proud my colleagues in the Netherlands are. It is wonderful that Hordijk gets this recognition. It shows that Hordijk was and is on the right track. That together we can look forward to a bright future”.
Ambitious goals
Hordijk has ambitious goals. This has everything to do with our values: connection and sustainability. We keep pace with social developments and lead the market. Our family-owned company has existed for 100 years for a reason. And on 1 July, the time has come. Hordijk is reshaping its future in Germany. Rik: “We are very happy that we can now really get started. Together we look forward to serving our customers in Germany as Hordijk Verpackungen GmbH”. Both in the Netherlands and in Germany, Hordijk is confidently looking forward to the next 100 years.
