Here’s what we are good at

At Hordijk, sustainable development comes first. Paying attention to people and the environment, we work to make our products and processes more sustainable and are constantly developing. See and read more about our sustainability initiatives.

Circular packaging

The future of plastic packaging is moving towards circular packaging solutions. We are working with the whole supply chain to improve recyclate so that we can reuse more raw material in high-quality, food-safe packaging. We are doing this, for example, by developing a mono meat tray with a locked seal. This allows us to improve the quality of the recyclate at the product design stage.

Reduction of CO2 emissions per product.

We are increasingly using recyclate in our packaging, which comes from used packaging that has been reprocessed into a food-safe raw material. This reduces the carbon footprint of our raw material use. The energy we use in our manufacturing processes is renewable. By designing smarter, we are reducing the carbon footprint of our products year on year.

Innovation for a more sustainable tomorrow.

Together with our customers, supply chain partners and the scientific community, we are constantly working on innovations aimed at new, more sustainable materials, sustainable design and reduced energy consumption.

OUR VALUES; CONNECTION AND SUSTAINABILITY

Innovation

We talk to CEO Rik Hennink about Hordijk’s vision for the future. If it were up to him, Hordijk would be an international supplier of innovative packaging, producer of sustainable horticultural greenhouses and related products for the food and agricultural industry, now and in the future. When making business decisions, we take advantage of opportunities that contribute to a better environment and optimal well-being for our colleagues and society. For example, Hordijk is currently making its packaging solutions as recyclable as possible. We manufacture our greenhouse product from high-quality materials that meet the growing global demand for horticultural products in a sustainable way. And we deploy our employees with a view to their commitment, safety and development.

“Plastic is easy to recycle and prevents a lot of food waste.”

We have to become more sustainable. Hordijk agrees. And we are doing it. Especially when it comes to plastics. If you look at the whole life cycle analysis (LCA), plastic packaging is often a more sustainable choice than other materials or no packaging at all. Plastic is easy to recycle, durable, easy to transport and prevents a lot of food waste. This is because packaged food has a longer shelf life. But that does not mean that Hordijk is committed to plastic at all costs. In 1966 – after 44 years of using wood – we switched to thermoformed plastic packaging. We face the future with the same innovative drive. We are open to sustainable alternatives and are closely following developments in wood pulp, cardboard and other organic materials.
